Intraosseous contrast media injection (CMI) is a safe and effective alternative for emergency computed tomography (CT) in severe trauma patients. This method provides image quality comparable to intravenous CMI without complications.

Background:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and image quality of i.o. CMI for emergency CT in severe trauma.
  • To compare i.o. CMI with conventional intravenous (i.v.) CMI in terms of image quality and safety.

  • Retrospective analysis of CT scans from severe trauma patients receiving either i.o. or i.v. CMI.
  • Objective (CNR) and subjective (Likert scale) image quality assessment.
  • Review of patient records for i.o. access-related complications.
