    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Sexology
    • Clinical Psychology

    Background:

    • Anorgasmia is a prevalent sexual dysfunction affecting women.
    • Systematic desensitization (SD) is a therapeutic technique used to treat phobias and anxiety-related disorders.
    • Group therapy offers a potentially accessible and supportive environment for addressing sexual concerns.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of group systematic desensitization (SD) for primary and secondary anorgasmia in women.
    • To assess the impact of group SD on various facets of sexual functioning and psychological adjustment.

    Main Methods:

    • A within-subjects design was employed with 22 women (8 primary, 14 secondary anorgasmia).
    • Participants received 15 sessions of group SD utilizing hierarchies of sexual scenes.
    • Measures of sexual adjustment and orgasmic frequency were administered pre-treatment, post-treatment, and at a 6-week follow-up.

    Main Results:

    • Significant improvements were observed in general and specific sexual adjustment.
    • Extracoital orgasmic frequency increased significantly post-treatment.
    • Enhanced sexual communication, partner satisfaction, and self-acceptance were reported.
    • Most treatment effects were maintained at the 6-week follow-up.

    Conclusions:

    • Group systematic desensitization is an effective treatment for improving sexual functioning in nonorgasmic women.
    • The therapy positively impacts sexual communication and psychological aspects of sexual self-perception.
    • Further controlled comparative studies are warranted to validate these findings.
