Survey Safety01:28

Survey Safety

380
Surveying near highways, rough terrain, or power lines involves significant risks. Working along highways is particularly dangerous and requires the use of warning signs and flagmen. It is safest to avoid working directly on roads and use offsets whenever possible. When highway work is unavoidable, it must follow all safety guidelines. Surveyors should wear bright clothing, such as orange reflective vests, to ensure visibility to motorists, coworkers, and hunters. In construction zones, wearing...

Nursing Interventions I: Taxonomy of Nursing Interventions

3.6K
Nursing interventions are chosen as part of the planning process to achieve patient outcomes. Once nursing diagnoses are determined, the goals and outcomes are specified, then the nursing interventions are selected and individualized according to the patient's situation.
A nursing intervention is a treatment or action based on scientific concepts and knowledge from the nursing, behavioral, and physical sciences. Identifying and prioritizing nursing interventions based on the desired outcome...

Nursing Interventions II: Selecting and Classifying the Nursing Interventions

3.1K
Creating and executing a nursing diagnosis helps nurses plan care and guide patient, family, and community interventions. They are developed based on a patient's physical evaluation and support measuring the outcomes. It is not recommended to select random interventions throughout the planning process. Instead, consider the following six essential factors when choosing interventions:

Detergent Purification of Membrane Proteins01:18

Detergent Purification of Membrane Proteins

6.3K
Detergents are used to purify the integral proteins of the membrane. The hydrophobic portion of the detergent can replace membrane phospholipids while solubilizing the membrane proteins. When detergent monomers reach a specific concentration in a solution called critical micelle concentration (CMC), they form micelles. Above CMC, the concentration of the detergent monomers remains in equilibrium with the micelle. The number of detergent monomers present in the CMC varies for each detergent, and...

Household Wiring And Electrical Safety01:13

Household Wiring And Electrical Safety

1.6K
Companies that supply power to most modern households use three conductors, typically called a three-wire line. While one is neutral, the other two are both at 120 V but with opposite polarity, giving a voltage of 240 V between them. With a three-wire line, high-power appliances that require 240 V, such as electric stoves and clothes dryers, are linked between the two hot lines. 120 V appliances can be connected between the neutral and either of the hot lines. The neutral side, which is always...

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

287
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs
Central to the success of community-based interventions is the...

Summary

Liquid laundry detergent packet exposures in young children decreased after 2015, possibly due to safety standards. However, exposures in older individuals are rising, indicating a need for improved safety measures.

Area of Science:

  • Toxicology
  • Public Health
  • Consumer Product Safety

Background:

  • Liquid laundry detergent packets (LLDPs) pose significant ingestion risks, particularly to young children.
  • Previous data indicated a concerning rise in LLDP exposures among children under 6 years old.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate LLDP exposures in children under 6 in the US.
  • To evaluate the impact of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) voluntary product safety standard on these exposures.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from the National Poison Data System (NPDS) from 2012 to 2017.
  • Focus on single and polysubstance exposures to LLDPs.

Main Results:

  • Over 72,000 LLDP exposures were recorded between 2012-2017, with 91.7% involving children under 6.
  • Exposures in children under 6 increased from 2012-2015, then decreased by 18% from 2015-2017.
  • Exposures in individuals aged 6 and older increased significantly (292.7%) over the study period.
  • Hospital admissions and serious outcomes for young children initially rose, then declined post-2015.

Conclusions:

  • A modest decrease in LLDP exposures and severity among young children is observed, likely linked to the ASTM standard and awareness campaigns.
  • There is a concerning increase in exposures among older children and adults.
  • Strengthening the current product safety standard is recommended to further mitigate LLDP-related incidents.
