To characterize the learning experiences of Medicine and Nursing students during their initial integration into professional practice.
To analyze how active learning and primary care integration influence student understanding of the Brazilian Health System and patient-centered care.

Main Methods:

Documentary research utilizing a qualitative approach.
Analysis of 21 portfolios from freshmen and sophomore Medicine and Nursing students.
Thematic content analysis of data from students at a São Paulo Higher Education Institution.

Main Results:

Students effectively learned the guiding principles of the Unified Health System (SUS).
Integration fostered a broader understanding of health-disease processes, focusing on community and household health needs.
Development of skills in humanized, interdisciplinary teamwork, emphasizing empathy and person-centered care.

Conclusions:

Early integration into primary care significantly enhances medical and nursing students' learning.
