Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Notalgia paresthetica is an under-recognized condition causing chronic pruritus on the upper back.
  • Symptoms include itching, burning, tingling, numbness, and hyperpigmentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize the current understanding of notalgia paresthetica.
  • To discuss its etiology, clinical presentation, and treatment challenges.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on notalgia paresthetica.
  • Analysis of proposed pathomechanisms and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Notalgia paresthetica is widely accepted as a sensory neuropathy.
  • It results from damage to the posterior rami of thoracic spinal nerves T2-T6.
