Background:

Observation:

  • Two female patients (35 and 48 years old) developed myoclonic seizures after starting lithium carbonate.
  • Both patients experienced generalized tonic-clonic seizures preceding the myoclonus.
  • EEG recordings revealed repetitive sharp waves concurrent with myoclonic seizures in both cases.

Findings:

  • Lithium therapy was associated with the emergence of myoclonic seizures.
  • Specific EEG abnormalities, characterized by repetitive sharp waves, were observed during myoclonus.
  • These clinical and EEG findings suggest a potential proconvulsant effect of lithium.
