Summary

This study shows that a new dance program, Movement and Motion (M&M), significantly improved mobility, gait, and range of motion in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Regular practice of this PD-specific training can enhance quality of life.

Background:

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) significantly impairs mobility, gait, and postural control.
  • While dance programs offer benefits, many do not improve gait in PD patients.
  • There is a need for dance programs specifically designed to address PD-related movement deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a novel, PD-specific dance program called Movement and Motion (M&M).
  • To assess the impact of M&M training on the mobility of individuals with Parkinson's disease.

Main Methods:

  • Nineteen participants with mild-to-moderate PD (Hoehn and Yahr stages 1-2) engaged in a 10-week M&M program.
  • Two 1-hour sessions were conducted weekly.
  • Quantitative measures of gait, posture, range of motion, and clinical scores were assessed pre- and post-training.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed in gait velocity, stride length, double support, stance duration, arm swing, and turning.
