Background:

Empathic accuracy, the ability to understand others' emotions, is theorized to improve social functioning.
Empirical evidence directly linking empathic accuracy to social behaviors and self-perception is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between empathic accuracy and prosocial behavior.
To examine the association between empathic accuracy and self-insecurity.
To test hypotheses regarding the impact of accurately perceiving negative and positive emotions on social outcomes.

Main Methods:

A sample of 211 undergraduates completed behavioral measures of empathic accuracy and helping.
Self-reported measures of self-insecurity were also administered.
Statistical analyses were used to assess the relationships between variables.

Main Results:

Higher empathic accuracy for negative emotions significantly predicted increased helping behavior.
Accurate perception of negative emotions was marginally associated with lower self-insecurity.
Empathic accuracy for positive emotions did not show significant associations with helping or self-insecurity.

Conclusions:

Accurate perception of others' negative emotions is linked to prosocial behavior and potentially healthier self-evaluation.
These findings suggest that emotion perception plays a crucial role in social functioning and prosociality.
Implications for social emotion regulation and interpersonal relationships warrant further investigation.
