    Summary

    This study found higher immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels and more antinuclear antibodies in glaucoma patients. However, these immune system markers do not appear to cause glaucoma.

    Background:

    • Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness.
    • The role of immune system dysregulation in glaucoma pathogenesis remains unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate serum immunoglobulin levels and antinuclear antibody prevalence in glaucoma patients.
    • To explore potential associations between immune markers and glaucoma severity.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples from 225 patients (chronic simple glaucoma, low tension glaucoma, ocular hypertension) and controls were analyzed.
    • Levels of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgM, IgG) and antinuclear antibodies were quantified.
    • Correlation with clinical parameters (visual fields, optic disc status) was assessed.

    Main Results:

    • Elevated mean IgG levels were observed in chronic simple glaucoma patients.
    • A higher proportion of patients with chronic simple glaucoma and ocular hypertension had antinuclear antibodies.
    • No significant correlation was found between IgG levels or antinuclear antibodies and disease severity.

    Conclusions:

    • While an association exists between elevated IgG and antinuclear antibodies in glaucoma, the findings are insufficient to establish immune system dysfunction as a causal factor.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the precise role of immune mechanisms in glaucoma.
