Summary

This study describes four gastric lymphomas with alpha-heavy chain disease (AHCD), noting similarities to Western gastric lymphomas (WGL). Histological analysis revealed low-grade follicular-centre cell lymphomas with plasmacytic differentiation in all cases.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Alpha-heavy chain disease (AHCD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder.
  • Gastric involvement in AHCD is uncommon compared to intestinal forms.
  • Distinguishing gastric AHCD from Western gastric lymphomas (WGL) can be challenging clinically.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinicopathological and immunohistological features of four cases of gastric lymphomas with alpha-heavy chain disease (AHCD).
  • To compare the features of gastric AHCD with those of Western gastric lymphomas (WGL).
  • To discuss the diagnostic implications of gastric AHCD.

Main Methods:

  • Case series review of four patients diagnosed with gastric AHCD.
  • Clinicopathological data collection and analysis.
  • Immunohistological examination of tumor tissues.

Main Results:

  • No reliable clinical features differentiated gastric AHCD from WGL.
  • Two cases exhibited diffuse mucosal involvement, similar to intestinal AHCD.
  • Histologically, all four cases were low-grade follicular-centre cell lymphomas with plasmacytic differentiation.

Conclusions:

  • Gastric AHCD presents with features that overlap with WGL, making clinical differentiation difficult.
  • The histological findings of low-grade follicular-centre cell lymphoma with plasmacytic differentiation are characteristic.
  • Accurate diagnosis of gastric AHCD is crucial for appropriate management and understanding its implications.
