  • Migraine is a highly prevalent and disabling neurological disorder.
  • Delayed diagnosis and treatment negatively impact patient quality of life and productivity.
  • There is a need for accessible methods to identify potential migraine sufferers in primary care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the reliability and validity of the KAMST questionnaire for screening migraine in primary care.
  • To compare the KAMST questionnaire with the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition diagnostic criteria for migraine without aura.

Main Methods:

  • A research study involving 298 patients (209 women, 89 men).
  • Part A: Questions based on the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition criteria for migraine without aura.
  • Part B: The KAMST questionnaire was administered to assess migraine.

Main Results:

  • Migraine diagnosed by ICD-H 3rd edition: 14.1% (42 patients).
  • Migraine diagnosed by KAMST: 27.9% (83 patients).
  • KAMST correctly identified 81% of patients diagnosed with migraine by ICD-H criteria (sensitivity) and had 81% specificity. Predictive negative value was 96%.

Conclusions:

  • The KAMST questionnaire is a reliable and valid method for screening patients with potential migraine in primary care.
  • The questionnaire can aid in selecting patients who require referral to a neurologist.
  • Further research may be needed to address the limitations identified in the study.
