Graduates from rural clinical schools (RCSs) are more likely to work rurally later in their careers. This study tracked Australian National University Medical School graduates to assess RCS effectiveness in addressing rural workforce needs.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Rural Health Workforce Studies
Background:
- Rural clinical schools (RCSs) are crucial for addressing Australia's rural doctor shortage.
- These programs require significant commitment from rural clinicians and communities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of RCSs by tracking the rural work locations of their graduates.
- To understand graduate retention in rural practice over time.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study analyzing work location data of Australian National University Medical School (ANUMS) graduates.
- Comparison of rural work placement rates between RCS and non-RCS graduates.
Main Results:
- The percentage of graduates working in rural areas significantly increased from 15.2% in postgraduate years 1-5 to 34.7% in postgraduate years 6-11 (P <0.001).
- A notable proportion of graduates initially work in urban settings before returning to rural practice.
Conclusions:
- RCSs contribute to a long-term increase in the rural health workforce.
- While graduates may take time to return to rural practice, their eventual return is a positive indicator for rural communities.
