Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between prediabetes and periodontitis.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 108 prediabetic patients diagnosed via fasting blood sugar (FBS), HbA1C, and oral glucose tolerance tests (GTT).
  • Periodontal health assessed using bleeding on probing (BOP), clinical attachment loss (CAL), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and pocket depth (PD).
  • Statistical analysis included t-test, ANOVA, and chi-square tests using SPSS version 16.

Main Results:

  • The study included 108 patients (19% male, 81% female, mean age 49 years, mean BMI 27.5).
  • Mean FBS, GTT, and HbA1C levels were 107 mg/dL, 137 mg/dL, and 5.9%, respectively.
  • 33% of patients had periodontitis, with significant differences in periodontal indices among prediabetic patients. Statistically significant relationships were found between FBS and BMI, BOP and GTT, and CAL and HbA1C.

Conclusions:

  • Periodontitis is significantly associated with prediabetes.
  • Poor glycemic control in prediabetic individuals increases the risk and severity of periodontitis.
  • Early diagnosis and management of prediabetes are essential for preventing severe periodontal disease and irreversible tissue damage.
