  • Ten adult male Macaca fascicularis primates underwent a 10-day nutritional depletion phase.

    • Higher nitrogen intake significantly improved nitrogen balance (p = 0.01) and serum total iron-binding capacity response (p = 0.02).

    Conclusions:

    • Nitrogen intake level is a more critical determinant than nonprotein calorie intake for achieving positive nitrogen balance and improving serum protein status in TPN-treated depleted primates.
    • Weight gain is primarily influenced by nonprotein calorie availability.
    • Selective repletion of fat and protein stores is achievable by modulating the nonprotein calorie and nitrogen content of TPN regimens.
