Amine-functionalized ZIF-8 effectively removes toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) via photocatalysis. This modified material shows significantly enhanced activity for environmental remediation under visible light.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Environmental Chemistry
- Nanotechnology
Background:
- Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) poses significant toxicity and carcinogenicity risks to ecosystems.
- Effective and facile methods for Cr(VI) removal are urgently needed.
- Zinc-based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) offer high porosity and stability for material modification.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop an efficient photocatalyst for Cr(VI) reduction.
- To investigate the impact of amine functionalization on ZIF-8's photocatalytic activity.
- To explore ZIF-8 modified with ethylenediamine (EDA) for visible-light-driven environmental remediation.
Main Methods:
- Solvothermal synthesis of ZIF-8 modified with varying ethylenediamine (EDA) content.
- Characterization of amine functionalization using XPS, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy.
- Evaluation of photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction efficiency under visible light irradiation.
Main Results:
- Amine functionalization was confirmed at the -CH3 site of ZIF-8's 2-methylimidazole chains.
- Amine-functionalized ZIF-8 exhibited a 9.8 times higher normalized rate constant (kSSA) for Cr(VI) reduction compared to unmodified ZIF-8.
- Enhanced catalytic activity and broader visible light absorption were observed in functionalized ZIF-8.
Conclusions:
- Amine-functionalized ZIF-8 demonstrates significantly improved photocatalytic activity for Cr(VI) reduction.
- The enhanced performance is attributed to increased electron density from surface-grafted amines.
- Amine-functionalized ZIF-8 is a promising visible-light-active photocatalyst for environmental remediation of Cr(VI).

Amides to Amines: LiAlH4 Reduction
Amide reduction requires two equivalents of the reducing agent, acting as a source of hydride ions. As shown in the figure, the reaction is initiated with a nucleophilic attack by the hydride ion at the carbonyl carbon to form a tetrahedral intermediate.
Nitriles to Amines: LiAlH4 Reduction
As shown below, the mechanism involves three steps. Firstly, the hydride ion acting as a nucleophile attacks the nitrile carbon to form an anion. In the second step, a second equivalent of the hydride ion attacks the anion to...
