An atomic orbital represents the three-dimensional regions in an atom where an electron has the highest probability to reside. The radial distribution function indicates the total probability of finding an electron within the thin shell at a distance r from the nucleus. The atomic orbitals have distinct shapes which are determined by l, the angular momentum quantum number. The orbitals are often drawn with a boundary surface, enclosing densest regions of the cloud.

Background:

  • Orbital osteomas are benign bone tumors that rarely occur in the orbit.

Observation:

  • A 29-year-old woman presented with two firm, subcutaneous nodules on the left inferonasal orbital rim.
  • Orbital CT revealed well-circumscribed, exophytic bony masses on the frontal process of the maxillary bone.

Findings:

  • The patient initially declined surgery but later underwent complete surgical excision due to tumor growth over five years.
  • Histopathological diagnosis confirmed an ivory-type osteoma.
  • A two-year follow-up showed the patient remained tumor-free.

Implications:

  • Orbital osteomas can manifest as palpable subcutaneous nodules along the orbital rim.
  • Surgical excision is a curative treatment for orbital osteomas.
  • Early diagnosis and management are crucial for favorable outcomes in orbital bone tumors.
