Professional divers report a high incidence of musculoskeletal complaints.
Existing literature highlights the occupational hazards faced by divers.
Understanding risk factors is crucial for preventative strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify factors contributing to musculoskeletal complaints in professional divers.
To analyze the relationship between work tasks, diving experiences, and physical ailments.
To inform targeted interventions for diver safety and well-being.

Main Methods:

A 2011 postal questionnaire survey of Norwegian inshore divers.
Analysis of musculoskeletal complaints, strain injuries, and joint pain prevalence.
Correlation of health outcomes with certification levels, job roles, and decompression sickness history.

Main Results:

Divers in the quay/construction industry showed significantly higher risks.
Experience of decompression sickness (DCS) was linked to increased musculoskeletal complaints.
Physically demanding tasks (construction, welding, etc.) and tool use (vibrating/rotating) correlated with higher risk.
Tingling/numbness after tool use and diving-related sick leave also increased risk.

Conclusions:

Professional divers in construction face elevated musculoskeletal risks.
Divers with a history of DCS are at higher risk for these complaints.
Heavy physical demands and specific work tasks are significant risk factors for diver musculoskeletal health.
