This case study highlights a rare giant cerebral Candida abscess in a 13-month-old infant. Prompt surgical removal and antifungal treatment led to successful recovery, emphasizing early diagnosis for pediatric brain infections.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Neurology
- Infectious Diseases
- Neurosurgery
Background:
- Fungal central nervous system infections and pediatric brain abscesses are rare but critical conditions.
- These infections often occur in immunocompromised individuals or infants with neurosurgical interventions.
Observation:
- A 13-month-old female infant with a history of eight ventriculoperitoneal shunt operations presented with feeding difficulties.
- Contrast-enhanced brain tomography revealed a large intracranial mass.
Findings:
- Surgical excision of the mass was performed, followed by pathological diagnosis of Candida abscess.
- The infant received antifungal treatment and was discharged after six weeks.
Implications:
- This case underscores the importance of considering fungal infections in pediatric brain abscesses, especially in shunt-dependent hydrocephalus patients.
- Early diagnosis and aggressive management, including surgical resection and antifungal therapy, are crucial for favorable outcomes.
- Highlights the potential for opportunistic fungal infections in vulnerable pediatric populations.
