pH Scale02:41

pH Scale

79.0K
Hydronium and hydroxide ions are present both in pure water and in all aqueous solutions, and their concentrations are inversely proportional as determined by the ion product of water (Kw). The concentrations of these ions in a solution are often critical determinants of the solution’s properties and the chemical behaviors of its other solutes. Two different solutions can differ in their hydronium or hydroxide ion concentrations by a million, billion, or even trillion times. A common means of...

Scaling

In designing and analyzing filters, resonant circuits, or circuit analysis at large, working with standard element values like 1 ohm, 1 henry, or 1 farad can be convenient before scaling these values to more realistic figures. This approach is widely utilized by not employing realistic element values in numerous examples and problems; it simplifies mastering circuit analysis through convenient component values. The complexity of calculations is thereby reduced, with the understanding that...

Thermometers and Temperature Scales

7.2K
Any physical property that depends consistently and reproducibly on temperature can be used as the basis of a thermometer. For example, volume increases with temperature for most substances. This property is the basis for the common alcohol thermometer and the original mercury thermometers. Other properties used to measure temperature include electrical resistance, color, and the emission of infrared radiation.
As many physical properties depend on temperature, the variety of thermometers is...

Sustainable Development

14.8K
As the human population continues to grow and use resources, we must be mindful of our planet’s natural limits. Sustainable development provides a pathway to maintain and improve human life now while also ensuring that future generations will have the resources that they need. The long-term success of sustainability efforts rests on understanding the interplay between human actions and ecological systems.

Gas Thermometers and the Kelvin Scale

6.1K
The definition of temperature in terms of molecular motion suggests that there should be a lowest possible temperature, where the average kinetic energy of molecules is zero (or the minimum allowed by quantum mechanics). Experiments confirm the existence of such a temperature, called absolute zero. An absolute temperature scale is one whose zero point is absolute zero. Such scales are convenient in science because several physical quantities, such as the volume of an ideal gas, are directly...

Development of the Lymphatic System01:15

Development of the Lymphatic System

2.0K
The development of lymphatic tissues and vessels in embryonic life begins around the fifth week. These structures originate from the mesoderm layer, with lymph sacs emerging from developing veins.
The first lymph sacs to form are the paired jugular lymph sacs located at the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins. From these sacs, lymphatic capillary plexuses extend to the thorax, upper limbs, neck, and head, eventually forming lymphatic vessels. Each jugular lymph sac maintains a...

Area of Science:

  • Psychometric assessment
  • Clinical psychology
  • Mental health research

Background:

  • Brooding is a repetitive negative thinking pattern.
  • Existing measures may not fully capture the nuances of brooding.
  • A validated scale is needed to assess brooding effectively.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Brooding Scale (BS).
  • To assess the psychometric properties of the BS in healthy adults.
  • To evaluate the scale's ability to differentiate between healthy individuals and those with schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • A preliminary questionnaire was developed through literature review and interviews.
  • A 15-item BS was administered to 124 healthy subjects for reliability and construct validity.
  • Convergent validity was assessed using the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS).
  • Discriminant validity was tested in 58 patients with schizophrenia.

Main Results:

  • The BS exhibited excellent internal consistency.
  • Factor analysis identified emotional and cognitive domains.
  • The BS showed significant positive correlations with the RRS.
  • Brooding Scale scores were significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy subjects.

Conclusions:

  • The Brooding Scale is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing brooding in healthy adults.
  • The BS demonstrates good discriminant validity for identifying brooding in patients with schizophrenia.
