Summary

This study developed the Brooding Scale (BS) to measure emotional and cognitive brooding. The BS demonstrated excellent reliability and validity in healthy adults and showed discriminant validity in patients with schizophrenia.

Background:

Brooding is a repetitive negative thinking pattern.
Existing measures may not fully capture the nuances of brooding.
A validated scale is needed to assess brooding effectively.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Brooding Scale (BS).
To assess the psychometric properties of the BS in healthy adults.
To evaluate the scale's ability to differentiate between healthy individuals and those with schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

A preliminary questionnaire was developed through literature review and interviews.
A 15-item BS was administered to 124 healthy subjects for reliability and construct validity.
Convergent validity was assessed using the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS).
Discriminant validity was tested in 58 patients with schizophrenia.

Main Results:

The BS exhibited excellent internal consistency.
Factor analysis identified emotional and cognitive domains.
The BS showed significant positive correlations with the RRS.
Brooding Scale scores were significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy subjects.

Conclusions:

The Brooding Scale is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing brooding in healthy adults.
The BS demonstrates good discriminant validity for identifying brooding in patients with schizophrenia.
