High expression of Zinc-finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB-1) is linked to worse overall survival in solid tumors. This meta-analysis suggests ZEB-1 is a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Molecular Biology
- Biomarker Research
Background:
- Zinc-finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB-1) is implicated in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and tumor progression.
- Previous studies on ZEB-1 as a cancer prognostic biomarker have yielded inconclusive results.
- The prognostic significance of ZEB-1 in human solid tumors requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a meta-analysis evaluating the prognostic value of ZEB-1 in patients with solid tumors.
- To determine if ZEB-1 expression levels correlate with overall survival (OS) in cancer patients.
Main Methods:
- A meta-analysis of 13 studies involving 1616 patients, with data searched from Web of Science, PubMed, and EBSCO up to September 2018.
- Pooled hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for OS were analyzed using random or fixed effects models.
- Univariate, multivariate, subgroup, heterogeneity, and publication bias analyses were performed to ensure reliability.
Main Results:
- Elevated ZEB-1 expression was significantly associated with worse OS in solid tumor patients.
- Univariate analysis showed a pooled HR for OS of 1.66 (95% CI: 1.45-1.90, P < 0.01).
- Multivariate analysis revealed a pooled HR for OS of 2.28 (95% CI: 1.58-3.30, P < 0.01), with no significant publication bias detected.
Conclusions:
- High ZEB-1 expression correlates with poorer overall survival in human solid tumors.
- ZEB-1 demonstrates potential as a prognostic biomarker for predicting cancer outcomes.
- ZEB-1 may represent a novel therapeutic target for human solid tumors.
