Summary

Schizophrenia patients show normal neural responses to stimulus probabilities, similar to healthy individuals. This suggests that perceptual inference mechanisms based on prediction error processing are intact in schizophrenia.

Background:

  • Schizophrenia (SZ) is associated with impaired prediction-error (ε) processing, affecting how individuals compare expected and incoming sensory stimuli.
  • Deficits in ε processing are observed in SZ patients across auditory and visual modalities, as evidenced by mismatch negativity studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of impaired ε processing in schizophrenia using neuroimaging.
  • To examine repetition suppression (RS) and the effects of repetition probability (P(rep)) on neural responses in SZ patients.

Main Methods:

  • A repetition-suppression (RS) paradigm was employed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
  • Seventeen SZ patients and 17 healthy controls (HC) viewed repeating or alternating face pairs.
  • fMRI blocks varied in the probability of repetition (P(rep)) to assess its effect on RS.

Main Results:

  • Significant RS was observed in the fusiform, occipital face areas, and lateral occipital cortex in both HC and SZ groups.
  • Repetition probability (P(rep)) effects on RS were similar in both groups, with larger RS in high-repetition probability blocks.

Conclusions:

  • Neural responses to repetition probability modulations are similar in schizophrenia patients and healthy participants.
  • The findings suggest that neural mechanisms underlying perceptual inferences based on stimulus probabilities are unimpaired in schizophrenia.
