Benign ethnic neutropenia (BEN) is common in certain ethnicities but often misdiagnosed. This review clarifies BEN, aiding physicians in distinguishing it from serious conditions and guiding patient management.

Background:

Benign ethnic neutropenia (BEN) is a prevalent cause of chronic neutropenia in individuals of African, Middle Eastern, and West Indian descent.
Physician unfamiliarity with BEN leads to unnecessary diagnostic evaluations for otherwise healthy individuals.
Patients with BEN do not exhibit an increased risk of infection.

Purpose of the Study:

To provide a comprehensive overview of benign ethnic neutropenia.
To guide clinical decision-making regarding the workup and monitoring of neutropenia in at-risk populations.
To review the genetic basis, proposed mechanisms, and implications of BEN, particularly in oncology.

Main Methods:

Literature review encompassing clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, and genetic associations of BEN.
Analysis of existing studies on BEN's impact on patients undergoing chemotherapy.
