Background:

  • Impostor phenomenon (IP) is characterized by a persistent inability to internalize accomplishments and fear of being exposed as a fraud.
  • While IP has been studied in academic librarians, health sciences librarians remain understudied.
  • Health sciences librarians often operate as subject matter experts with limited formal training in specialized medical areas, potentially increasing vulnerability to IP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure the prevalence of impostor phenomenon among health sciences librarians.
  • To investigate the relationship between impostor phenomenon scores and demographic variables within this professional group.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional online survey was administered to 2,125 eligible Medical Library Association (MLA) members from October to December 2017.
  • The Harvey Impostor Phenomenon scale was used as the validated measure for assessing impostor feelings.
  • One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to analyze demographic associations with impostor phenomenon scores.

Main Results:

  • A total of 703 participants completed the survey, yielding a 33% response rate.
  • 14.5% of participants reported possible impostor feelings (Harvey scale score ≥42).
  • Educational background in health sciences, older age, and more years of experience were associated with lower impostor phenomenon scores.

Conclusions:

  • The prevalence of impostor phenomenon among health sciences librarians is comparable to that observed in academic librarians.
  • Interventions should focus on raising awareness, implementing early prevention strategies, and providing support for early-career and younger librarians.
  • Professional organizations like the MLA can play a role in addressing impostor phenomenon within the health sciences librarianship community.
