    Background:

    • Otitis media with effusion (OME) and recurrent otitis media are common in children.
    • The role of adenoid tissue in the etiology of OME is debated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the bacteriological and virological findings in adenoid tissue from children with and without ear diseases.
    • To determine the association between adenoid pathogens and OME.

    Main Methods:

    • Adenoidectomy specimens from 144 children were analyzed for bacteria and viruses.
    • Bacteriological and virological cultures were compared between children with ear diseases and controls.

    Main Results:

    • Hemophilus influenza was cultured in 50% of children with ear diseases vs. 14% of controls.
    • Viruses were isolated from 28% of children with ear diseases vs. 3% of controls.
    • These differences were statistically significant.

    Conclusions:

    • Adenoid tissue harbors pathogens implicated in OME.
    • Infected adenoids may directly cause or indirectly contribute to OME via eustachian tube dysfunction.
    • Adenoidectomy may be a beneficial treatment for recurrent OME.
