Bone procurement workshops effectively enhance knowledge for medical personnel. Training significantly improved understanding of bone allograft handling, donor screening, and packaging, reducing infection risks.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Surgical Training
- Allograft Procurement
Background:
- Improper bone allograft handling can lead to contamination and post-operative infections in recipients.
- Bone procurement workshops are essential for training personnel involved in allograft procedures.
- This study assesses the effectiveness of a bone procurement workshop's curriculum and materials.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of a bone procurement workshop.
- To assess improvements in participant knowledge regarding bone allograft procurement.
- To validate the workshop's teaching materials and content.
Main Methods:
- A 2-day bone procurement workshop was conducted for doctors and paramedics.
- Pre- and post-workshop assessments using self-administered questionnaires evaluated knowledge.
- Participant knowledge was compared before and after the training intervention.
Main Results:
- Post-assessment scores (61.4%) were significantly higher than pre-assessment scores (32.2%).
- All five workshop topics showed significant knowledge improvement post-training.
- Doctors and paramedics demonstrated statistically significant knowledge gains in all areas.
Conclusions:
- The bone procurement workshop effectively improved cognitive knowledge among participants.
- Workshop content and teaching materials were successful in enhancing understanding of bone procurement.
- The training is vital for personnel in the National Donation Programme to ensure allograft quality and safety.
