Endoscopic selective varices devascularization (ESVD) is a safe and effective treatment for esophageal gastric varices bleeding (EGVB) in children. While initial results are promising, long-term effectiveness requires further investigation.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Endoscopic Surgery
Background:
- Esophageal gastric varices bleeding (EGVB) poses a significant risk in children.
- Endoscopic selective varices devascularization (ESVD) is a potential treatment modality.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ESVD in pediatric patients with EGVB.
- To assess complications associated with ESVD in this population.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of clinical data from five pediatric patients treated with ESVD.
- Evaluation of treatment outcomes, including rebleeding rates and complications.
Main Results:
- No rebleeding occurred at one-week follow-up.
- Three patients required further endoscopic intervention at three months due to stenosis or recurrence.
- One patient experienced mesenteric thrombosis, successfully treated with heparin.
Conclusions:
- ESVD appears to be a safe and effective initial treatment for pediatric EGVB.
- Long-term efficacy of ESVD warrants further research and extended follow-up studies.
