Base Quantities and Derived Quantities01:14

Base Quantities and Derived Quantities

25.9K
In any system of units, the units for some physical quantities must be specified through a measurement process. These measurements are the base quantities of the system, and their units are the base units of the system. The algebraic combinations of the base values can then be used to express all other physical quantities. Each of these physical quantities is then referred to as a derived quantity, with each unit being referred to as a derived unit.

Chromatin Packaging

19.0K
Each human somatic cell contains 6 billion base pairs of DNA. Each base pair is 0.34 nm long, meaning each diploid cell contains a staggering 2 meters of DNA. This long DNA strand is packed inside a nucleus measuring only 10-20 microns in diameter with the help of specialized DNA-binding proteins called histones. Together they form a compact DNA-protein complex called chromatin. The chromatin is further compacted into higher-order structures. The highest level of compaction is achieved during...

Each human somatic cell contains 6 billion base-pairs of DNA. Each base-pair is 0.34 nm long, which means that each diploid cell contains a staggering 2 meters of DNA. How is such a long DNA strand packed inside a nucleus measuring only 10 - 20 microns in diameter?
The chromatin
In combination with specialized DNA binding protein called Histones, the DNA double helix forms a compact DNA: protein complex called chromatin. The chromatin itself is further compacted into higher-order...

Estimation of the Physical Quantities01:05

Estimation of the Physical Quantities

7.3K
On many occasions, physicists, other scientists, and engineers need to make estimates of a particular quantity. These are sometimes referred to as guesstimates, order-of-magnitude approximations, back-of-the-envelope calculations, or Fermi calculations. The physicist Enrico Fermi was famous for his ability to estimate various kinds of data with surprising precision. Estimating does not mean guessing a number or a formula at random. Instead, estimation means using prior experience and sound...

Summary

Smaller cigar packages are cheaper per pack but more expensive per stick. For filtered cigars, smaller packages were linked to initiation and lower consumption, but not for other cigar types.

Area of Science:

  • Tobacco control research
  • Public health policy
  • Substance use behavior

Background:

  • Some regions regulate minimum cigar package quantities.
  • Limited research exists on the impact of small cigar packages on initiation and consumption.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the association between cigar package quantity and price.
  • To assess the relationship between cigar package quantity and cigar/cigarette use over time.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (Waves 1-2).
  • Analyzed associations between cigar package quantity and price/use for filtered cigars, cigarillos, and large cigars.

Main Results:

  • Smaller cigar packages were cheaper per pack but pricier per stick.
  • Filtered cigar starters favored smaller packages; smaller packages correlated with lower consumption over time.
  • No significant associations were found for cigarillos or large cigars regarding initiation or consumption changes.

Conclusions:

  • Package quantity consistently related to price but showed limited association with changes in cigar smoking behavior for most types.
  • Further research is needed to explore the causal role of package quantity in filtered cigar initiation and consumption.
