Summary

Mini-dental implants (MDIs) supporting horse-shoe overdentures significantly improve speech and patient satisfaction in edentulous patients. While minor speech and oromyofunctional issues persist, overall oral health-related quality of life is enhanced.

Background:

Edentulism and conventional dentures negatively impact oral health-related quality of life.
Patient satisfaction with dental implants hinges on improvements in eating, speech, and aesthetics.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate speech, oromyofunctional behavior, treatment satisfaction, and quality of life with horse-shoe overdentures retained by mini-dental implants (MDIs) in the maxilla.

Main Methods:

Prospective multicentre cohort study involving 32 edentulous patients.
Placement of 5-6 mini-dental implants (MDIs) in the maxilla.
Phonetic evaluation, oromyofunctional assessment, OHIP-14, and visual analogue scale for satisfaction at three treatment stages.

Main Results:

Speech disturbances decreased significantly after MDI treatment, with only minor issues (e.g., /s/ sound) in some patients.
Oromyofunctional problems, like whistling, were noted in a smaller number of patients post-treatment.
High patient satisfaction reported: 83% with treatment and 84% with speech outcomes.

Conclusions:

Maxillary horse-shoe overdentures supported by MDIs offer substantial improvements in speech and patient satisfaction.
While some residual speech and oromyofunctional issues exist, the overall impact on quality of life is positive.
