Modified Boxplots

10.8K
A standard box and whisker plot informs us about the spread of the data in a given sample. One can identify the minimum value, maximum value, first quartile value, second quartile or median value, and third quartile.
However, the box plot does not tell the reader about outliers - values that lie far from the center of the data. We can modify the standard box and whisker plot to identify the outliers and visualize the actual spread of the data in a sample.
Initially, we calculate the adjusted...

Base complementarity between the three base pairs of mRNA codon and the tRNA anticodon is not a failsafe mechanism. Inaccuracies can range from a single mismatch to no correct base pairing at all. The free energy difference between the correct and nearly correct base pairs can be as small as 3 kcal/ mol. With complementarity being the only proofreading step, the estimated error frequency would be one wrong amino acid in every 100 amino acids incorporated. However, error frequencies observed in...

Antiasthma Drugs: Leukotriene Modifiers01:19

Antiasthma Drugs: Leukotriene Modifiers

1.8K
Leukotriene modifiers, or cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonists, are medications used to manage chronic asthma. These agents target specific inflammatory mediators produced during arachidonic acid metabolism, an essential process in generating inflammation in the body.
Leukotriene modifiers work through two distinct mechanisms:

Photoluminescence: Applications

1.0K
Photoluminescence offers a wide range of applications due to its inherent sensitivity and selectivity. This technique allows for both direct and indirect analyses of the analyte. Direct quantitative analysis is possible when the analyte exhibits a favorable quantum yield for fluorescence or phosphorescence. However, an indirect analysis may be feasible if the analyte is not fluorescent or phosphorescent, or if the quantum yield is unfavorable. Indirect methods include reacting the analyte with...

Area of Science:

  • Hydrology
  • Agricultural Science
  • Climate Science

Background:

  • Drought monitoring is crucial for human adaptation and hazard management.
  • Existing drought indices lack consideration for agricultural irrigation impacts.
  • Accurate drought assessment is vital for water resource management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a Modified Palmer Drought Severity Index (MPDSI) incorporating agricultural irrigation.
  • To evaluate the MPDSI's effectiveness in monitoring drought conditions, especially in irrigated areas.
  • To compare MPDSI with existing indices like PDSI and sc-PDSI.

Main Methods:

  • Modification of the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) to include irrigation quotas and soil water deficits.
  • Comparative analysis of drought monitoring using MPDSI against PDSI and sc-PDSI.
  • Validation of MPDSI performance in drought-affected regions.

Main Results:

  • MPDSI accurately monitors drought conditions in irrigated regions.
  • MPDSI effectively accounts for human influences like irrigation on drought.
  • MPDSI reduces the overestimation of drought duration and intensity observed with PDSI.

Conclusions:

  • MPDSI is a reliable tool for drought monitoring in irrigated agricultural areas.
  • The MPDSI offers improved drought assessment by integrating irrigation data.
  • The methodology behind MPDSI can be applied globally for enhanced drought management.
