Background:

  • Glaucoma visual field (VF) progression detection is crucial for patient management.
  • Previous work established binomial pointwise linear regression (PLR) for VF progression detection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the binomial PLR method for detecting glaucomatous VF progression within the central 24° visual field.
  • To compare the time to detect progression using binomial PLR against other established methods.

Main Methods:

  • A series of 15 VFs from 341 eyes (233 patients) over 7.9±2.1 years were analyzed.
  • Binomial PLR was applied by regressing total deviation of all test points.
  • Progression detection time was compared between binomial PLR, permutation analysis of PLR (PoPLR), and mean total deviation (mTD) trend analysis.

Main Results:

  • Binomial PLR demonstrated comparable positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and false positive rates to PoPLR and mTD analyses.
  • The time to classify progression using binomial PLR (5.8±2.8 years) was significantly shorter than mTD (6.7±2.8 years) and PoPLR (6.6±2.7 years).

Conclusions:

  • Binomial PLR significantly detects glaucomatous VF progression in the central 24° earlier than PoPLR and mTD analyses.
  • This method holds promise for enhancing early detection of VF progression in glaucoma clinical management and trials.
