Testosterone: Functions and Regulation01:26

Testosterone: Functions and Regulation

2.1K
The intricate hormonal interplay essential for male reproductive health begins with the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) by the hypothalamus. This hormone prompts the pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). LH targets the Leydig cells in the testes, stimulating them to produce and release testosterone. In concert with testosterone, FSH acts on the Sertoli cells within the seminiferous tubules to facilitate the release of...

High-Level and Low-Level Awareness

631
Controlled processes in human consciousness represent high-alert mental states where individuals deliberately focus their attention on achieving specific goals. Controlled processes can be seen in situations like mastering new technology, where a person might become so absorbed that they ignore surrounding distractions. Such processes involve selective attention, requiring one to concentrate on particular elements of experience while disregarding others. These are governed by executive...

Leveling Effect01:29

Leveling Effect

1.4K
In acid-base chemistry, the leveling effect refers to the limitation imposed by the solvent on the strength of acids and bases in solution. When a base stronger than the solvent's conjugate base is used, it deprotonates the solvent until the base is entirely consumed, making it ineffective against weaker acids. Conversely, an acid stronger than the solvent's conjugate acid protonates the solvent until the acid is depleted, rendering it ineffective against weaker bases. Essentially, the...

Levels of Organization01:09

Levels of Organization

139.0K
Biological organization is the classification of biological structures, ranging from atoms at the bottom of the hierarchy to the Earth's biosphere. Each level of the hierarchy represents an increase in complexity that builds upon the previous level.
Molecules Are Composed of Atoms, and Biomolecules Are Assembled from Molecules:
The most basic levels include atoms, molecules, and biomolecules. Atoms, the smallest unit of ordinary matter, are composed of a nucleus and electrons. Molecules...

Fermi Level01:18

Fermi Level

1.7K
The Fermi-Dirac function is represented by an S-shaped curve indicating the probability of an energy state being occupied by an electron at a given temperature. The Fermi level is the energy level at which there is a fifty percent chance of finding an electron, and it is positioned between the lower-energy valence band and the higher-energy conduction band.
At absolute zero temperature, electrons fill all energy states up to the Fermi level, leaving upper states empty. As the temperature rises,...

Trophic Levels01:35

Trophic Levels

37.3K
All organisms in an ecosystem occupy a trophic level in the food chain. The lowest level consists of primary producers, which synthesize their food from either solar or chemical energy. Each subsequent level obtains energy from the levels below. Detritivores can occupy any of the levels above primary producers.

Summary

Men with chronic migraine may have lower total serum testosterone levels. This pilot study found significantly reduced testosterone in men with chronic migraine compared to normative data.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Endocrinology
  • Men's Health

Background:

  • Chronic migraine is a prevalent and disabling neurological condition.
  • Low testosterone (hypogonadism) affects men's health and well-being.
  • The relationship between chronic migraine and testosterone levels is not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if men diagnosed with chronic migraine exhibit lower total serum testosterone levels than expected.
  • To explore potential links between chronic migraine and hypogonadism.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational pilot study.
  • Recruited 14 men (ages 26-51) meeting International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd edition criteria for chronic migraine.
  • Measured serum total testosterone levels.

Main Results:

  • Mean total testosterone in patients was 322 ng/dL (reference range: 300-1080 ng/dL), falling in the lower 5% of the lab's reference range.
  • Men with chronic migraine had significantly lower testosterone levels compared to published age-matched normative medians (median difference: 62 ng/dL, P=0.0494).

Conclusions:

  • Findings suggest altered hypothalamic regulation in men with chronic migraine.
  • Lower testosterone levels in this group warrant further investigation.
  • Future research should explore testosterone supplementation for chronic migraine management and hypogonadism symptom relief.
