Summary

Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHA) performance did not predict active macular disease, despite correlations with visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. This suggests CAPTCHA is not a reliable tool for assessing visual dysfunction in these patients.

Background:

  • Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHA) is used for spam prevention.
  • Its utility in assessing visual impairment, particularly in macular disease, is not well-established.
  • Traditional visual acuity (VA) may not fully capture visual dysfunction in macular disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if CAPTCHA performance provides additional information on macular disease-related visual dysfunction.
  • To determine if CAPTCHA performance correlates with active macular disease (intraretinal fluid [IRF] or subretinal fluid [SRF]).

Main Methods:

  • Pilot study involving 70 participants (33 with active macular disease, 37 controls).
  • Assessed CAPTCHA performance, near/distance VA, contrast sensitivity, and reading speed.
  • Defined active disease by IRF or SRF on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.

Main Results:

  • Contrast sensitivity was significantly reduced in patients with IRF and SRF (p < 0.01).
  • CAPTCHA performance (edit distance, percent correct) did not significantly differ between active disease and control groups (p > 0.22).
  • Logistic regression showed CAPTCHA performance did not improve prediction of IRF or SRF.

Conclusions:

  • Distance VA and contrast sensitivity correlate with active macular disease.
  • CAPTCHA performance was not a significant predictor of IRF or SRF in this pilot study.
  • CAPTCHA may not be a suitable tool for assessing visual dysfunction in macular disease.
