Therapeutic Index01:13

Therapeutic Index

6.7K
The therapeutic index of a drug is a key parameter in pharmacology that quantifies the relative safety of a drug by calculating the ratio between the dose that causes toxicity in half the population (50%) to the dose that proves to be effective for half the population (50%). It provides a spectrum of doses for a particular drug ranging from effective to potentially toxic. To illustrate, consider an anticoagulant agent like warfarin. It possesses a narrow window within its therapeutic index to...

Electrical Current01:10

Electrical Current

6.9K
Electrical current is defined as the rate at which charge flows. When there is a large current present, such as that used to run a refrigerator, a large amount of charge moves through the wire in a small amount of time. If the current is small, such as that used to operate a handheld calculator, a small amount of charge moves through the circuit over a long period of time. The SI unit for current is the ampere (A), named for the French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836).

Significance of Displacement Current01:27

Significance of Displacement Current

5.8K
A displacement current is analogous to a real current in Ampère's law, participating in Ampère's law the same way as the usual conduction current. However, it is produced by a changing electric field. Displacement current is defined in terms of a time-varying electric field, and also has an associated displacement current density. By adding a term accounting for displacement current, Maxwell modified the existing Ampère's law, which is now called generalized Ampère's law.

Current Trends in Nursing II

3.4K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Therapeutic Communication01:30

Therapeutic Communication

7.7K
Communication is a lifelong learning process. Through therapeutic communication, nurses can collect relevant assessment data, provide education and counseling, and interact during nursing interventions. Sending and receiving messages occur through verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and can happen separately or simultaneously.
Verbal communication depends on language or a prescribed way of using words so that people can share information effectively. The critical aspects of verbal...

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Oncology
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Pancoast's syndrome arises from lung's superior sulcus tumors, affecting the thoracic inlet, brachial plexus, and stellate ganglion.
  • Advanced imaging like CT and MRI detect early lesions missed by radiography and assess disease extent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for Pancoast tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of diagnostic imaging (CT, MRI) and treatment modalities.
  • Analysis of surgical, radiation, and chemotherapy protocols.

Main Results:

  • Surgery is indicated for T3N0M0 staged tumors confined to the chest after thorough assessment.
  • Palliative resection may benefit inoperable patients with severe pain post-irradiation.
  • Multimodal therapy, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, is crucial for optimal outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • A multidisciplinary approach involving surgeons, clinicians, and radiologists is essential for Pancoast tumor management.
  • Further research is needed to optimize surgical techniques, including minimally invasive approaches.
