This case report details the successful surgical management of a functional paraganglioma in the mediastinum. The patient experienced an uneventful recovery and remained recurrence-free during a 12-month follow-up.
Area of Science:
- Neuroendocrine Tumors
- Surgical Oncology
- Diagnostic Pathology
Background:
- Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors originating from chromaffin cells.
- These tumors can be functional (secreting catecholamines) or nonfunctional.
- Mediastinal paragliomas present unique diagnostic and management challenges.
Observation:
- A 47-year-old male presented with a functional paraganglioma in the left posterior mediastinum.
- Diagnosis was confirmed via CT, biopsy, and immunohistochemistry.
- The patient received preoperative alpha-blockade and fluid resuscitation.
Findings:
- A single-stage left thoracotomy successfully resected the mediastinal paraganglioma.
- The postoperative course was uncomplicated.
- No recurrence or abnormal blood pressure was noted at 12-month follow-up.
Implications:
- This case highlights effective preoperative management and surgical resection of mediastinal paragangliomas.
- Long-term follow-up is crucial for assessing treatment efficacy and detecting potential malignancy.
- Accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment are key for favorable outcomes in paraganglioma management.

Cranial Bones: Superior and Posterior View
The frontal bone is the single bone that forms the forehead. At its anterior midline, between the eyebrows, there is a slight depression called the glabella. The frontal bone also forms the supraorbital margin of the orbit. Near the middle of this margin is the supraorbital foramen, the opening that provides passage for a sensory nerve to the forehead. The frontal bone is thickened just above each supraorbital margin,...
