Virtual Work01:20

Virtual Work

1.3K
The principle of virtual work states that if a body is in static and dynamic equilibrium, then the sum of all the virtual work done by all external forces and couple moments for any given virtual displacement must be zero.
In static equilibrium, a body can experience an imaginary or virtual movement, such as displacement or rotation. The virtual work done by a force is equal to the dot product of force and virtual displacement in the direction of the force. When it comes to virtually rotating a...

Sampling Plans

905
Sampling is a crucial step in analytical chemistry, allowing researchers to collect representative data from a large population. Common sampling methods include random, judgmental, systematic, stratified, and cluster sampling.
Random sampling is a method where each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected for the sample. It involves selecting individuals randomly, often using random number generators or lottery-type methods. For example, when analyzing the properties of a...

Planning Nursing Care I01:21

Planning Nursing Care I

5.6K
The planning phase of the nursing process helps nurses set priorities, outline patient-centered goals and expected outcomes, and tailor nursing interventions to align with the aligned care plan. Through the planning phase, the nurse applies critical thinking skills to align and develop interventions according to the patient's needs. It provides continuity of care allowing patients to receive the maximum benefit from treatment. It serves as a pilot plan for allocating individual staff to a...

Planning Nursing Care II

3.6K
A nursing care plan can present in two forms: informal and formal. Informal is a care plan for the individual use of the nurse and goals they wish to accomplish during their shift. Informal care plans are not included in the patient chart. A formal nursing care plan is a written or computerized guide that organizes patient care. It is further subdivided into two: standardized and individualized care plans. Standardized care plans are pre-populated care plans for specific patient populations,...

Principle of Virtual Work: Problem Solving

1.6K
The principle of virtual work is an essential concept in the field of mechanics and engineering. This is used to solve problems related to the equilibrium of a structure or system. It is based on the assumption that if a system is in equilibrium, the work done by all the forces during a virtual displacement is zero. This principle is applied by considering virtual displacements of the system and the corresponding work done by internal and external forces.
To apply the principle of virtual work,...

Virtual Work for a System of Connected Rigid Bodies01:06

Virtual Work for a System of Connected Rigid Bodies

742
Virtual work is a powerful method used to solve problems involving several connected rigid bodies. When the system is in equilibrium, virtual work is zero. This allows the calculation of the resulting forces when a system undergoes a virtual displacement. When attempting to analyze such a system, first, use a free-body diagram, where an independent coordinate represents the configuration of the links, and mark its deflected position resulting from the positive virtual displacement.

Summary

This systematic review found that while craniofacial virtual surgical planning (VSP) literature is growing, its quality remains low, with most studies lacking robust evidence. Future research needs higher-level study designs for better VSP evidence.

Area of Science:

  • Craniofacial Surgery
  • Medical Imaging
  • Evidence-Based Medicine

Background:

  • Virtual surgical planning (VSP) is increasingly utilized in craniofacial surgery.
  • The quality and level of evidence in published VSP literature are currently unknown.
  • This systematic review aimed to assess the evidence level of VSP studies in craniofacial surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and determine the level of evidence of published articles on virtual surgical planning in craniofacial surgery.
  • To evaluate the quality of research supporting VSP in this surgical subspecialty.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review of PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect databases was conducted.
  • Inclusion criteria focused on patient-specific surgical outcomes and studies with a measurable level of evidence.
  • Articles were ranked using a standard evidence-based medicine scale (Level I to V).

Main Results:

  • 273 articles were included from an initial search of 1524.
  • The average level of evidence was 4.1, indicating low-quality evidence (predominantly Level IV and V).
  • No Level I (randomized controlled trials) articles were found; Level IV (case series) constituted the majority of studies.

Conclusions:

  • Despite an increase in craniofacial VSP publications, the overall quality of evidence is poor.
  • Future VSP research requires more rigorous study designs, such as prospective cohort studies or randomized controlled trials, to improve evidence quality.
