Patient comprehension of surgical procedures is alarmingly low, with many unaware of the organ operated on or the procedure

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Patient Safety
  • Surgical Outcomes

Background:

  • Informed consent is a cornerstone of ethical medical practice.
  • Patient understanding of surgical procedures prior to consent has not been previously validated in this country.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess patient comprehension of their surgical procedures after operation.
  • To identify factors influencing patient understanding of surgical interventions.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study involving 100 post-operative patients in a teaching hospital surgical unit.
  • Interviews conducted by an independent medical observer 2-5 days after surgery.

Main Results:

  • All patients knew they had an operation, but 27% did not know the operated organ and 44% were unaware of the procedure's nature.
Keywords:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients over 60 years old were significantly more likely to lack basic knowledge about their surgery.
  • Conclusions:

    • A significant gap exists in patient understanding of surgical information post-consent.
    • Age is a key factor associated with poor comprehension, highlighting a need for improved patient communication strategies.
    • Further large-scale investigations are warranted due to the medical and legal implications.
