Background:

Childhood maltreatment is a known risk factor for eating disorders.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently co-occurs with eating disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

To systematically review recent literature on comorbid PTSD in eating disorder patients.
To examine the prevalence, symptom severity relationship, mechanisms, and treatment of comorbid PTSD in eating disorders.

Main Methods:

Systematic literature review of recent studies.
Analysis of prevalence data, symptom severity correlations, and proposed mechanisms.
Review of preliminary treatment outcome studies.

Main Results:

Comorbid PTSD prevalence in eating disorder patients ranges from 9% to 24%.
PTSD comorbidity is associated with increased eating disorder symptom severity.
Maladaptive emotional regulation may be a mediating factor.

Conclusions:

PTSD is a significant comorbidity impacting eating disorder severity.
Emotional regulation difficulties may be a shared underlying mechanism.
Concurrent treatments like CBT and rTMS show preliminary promise but require further research.
