Persistent ST segment elevations after myocardial infarction (MI) surgery often remain. Successful left ventricular aneurysm repair showed minimal ST segment regression, with most patients retaining elevated ST segments despite clinical improvements.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Cardiac Surgery
    • Electrocardiography

    Background:

    • Post-myocardial infarction (MI) aneurysms are frequently associated with persistent ST segment elevations on electrocardiograms (ECGs).
    • The resolution of these ST segment elevations following surgical intervention for left ventricular aneurysms is not well-documented.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the regression patterns of ST segment elevations after successful surgical repair of left ventricular aneurysms.
    • To correlate ST segment changes with postoperative heart size and New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Class.

    Main Methods:

    • Serial electrocardiograms were analyzed in 74 patients who underwent surgery for left ventricular aneurysms.
    • Preoperative and postoperative ECGs were compared, alongside assessments of heart size and NYHA Functional Class.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Mean precordial ST elevation decreased significantly (P < 0.025), but the highest ST segment elevation per lead showed no significant change (P < 0.1).
    • While 89.2% of patients improved clinically and 62.2% showed improved heart size, ST elevation persisted in all cases.
    • Only 25.7% of patients exhibited reduced ST elevation postoperatively.

    Conclusions:

    • ST segment elevations tend to persist after surgical repair of left ventricular aneurysms.
    • Postoperative ST segment changes show little correlation with reductions in heart size or clinical improvement.
