Background:

Parotidectomy is a common surgical procedure.
Understanding 30-day readmission patterns is crucial for improving patient care and reducing healthcare costs.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the incidence, causes, risk factors, and costs of 30-day readmissions following parotidectomy.
To identify key predictors for readmission in this patient population.

Main Methods:

Retrospective cohort study utilizing the Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD).
Analysis of 15,102 patients who underwent parotidectomy between 2010 and 2014.
Multivariate logistic regression to identify risk factors for 30-day readmission.

Main Results:

3.9% of patients (594) were readmitted within 30 days, with an average cost of $12,502 per readmission.
Infections (22.7%) and wound complications (11.2%) were the most frequent causes.
Significant predictors included advanced comorbidity, malignant parotid tumors, prolonged length of stay (≥2 days), and nonroutine discharge.

Conclusions:

Nearly 4% of parotidectomy patients experience 30-day readmissions, primarily due to infections and wound issues.
Quality improvement efforts should target infection and wound complication prevention.
Advanced comorbidity, malignant tumors, longer hospital stays, and nonroutine discharges are key risk factors for readmission.
