This study validated a modified Emotiv Epoc® (M-EMOTIV) mobile electroencephalography system against a clinical-grade device. Results show good correlation, supporting its use in psychophysiological research.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Biomedical Engineering
- Psychophysiology
Background:
- Clinical-grade electroencephalography (EEG) systems are standard but often lack portability.
- Mobile EEG systems offer potential for wider application but require validation against established methods.
- The Emotiv Epoc® is a commercially available mobile EEG device with potential for research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare a modified reconfigurable mobile EEG system (M-EMOTIV) with a clinical-grade EEG system (Neuronic MEDICID-05®).
- To validate the accuracy and rationale of recordings from the M-EMOTIV prototype.
- To assess the suitability of the M-EMOTIV for psychophysiological experiments.
Main Methods:
- A modified Emotiv Epoc® (M-EMOTIV) system was used alongside a Neuronic MEDICID-05® system.
- Fifteen healthy participants performed a visual oddball task.
- Electrophysiological data and behavioral responses were recorded simultaneously from both devices.
- Pearson's correlation analysis was employed for comparative assessment.
Main Results:
- A good correlation was found between the M-EMOTIV and the clinical-grade system for electrophysiological measures.
- The modified Emotiv Epoc® demonstrated its ability to suitably record EEG data.
- Simultaneous mobile EEG and behavioral recordings were achieved.
Conclusions:
- The modified Emotiv Epoc® (M-EMOTIV) is a validated alternative for mobile EEG recordings.
- This system supports psychophysiological experiments requiring simultaneous behavioral and EEG data.
- The M-EMOTIV system enhances the feasibility of mobile EEG research.
