Background:

College selectivity correlates with positive life outcomes, yet antecedents like religion remain under-researched.
A long history exists linking religion and social stratification research.
Conservative Protestant (CP) backgrounds may influence college selectivity.

Purpose of the Study:

To test for and explain differences in college selectivity among CP students compared to others.
To investigate the role of gender and academic ability in these differences.
To explore the cultural and social factors contributing to observed patterns.

Main Methods:

Quantitative analysis of survey data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (N=2,093).
Qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews from the National Study of Youth and Religion (N=46).
Hypothesis testing based on prior literature and theory regarding religion and stratification.

Main Results:

CP students attend less selective colleges than their peers, a difference amplified among those with higher high school GPAs.
Gender moderates this effect: differences disappear for men when controlling for background, but persist for CP women.
The gap in selectivity for CP women is larger among those with higher academic ability.

Conclusions:

Differences in college selectivity between CP students and others persist, particularly for women.
Qualitative data reveal differing perceptions of college's purpose (self-betterment vs. human capital) influence women's choices.
Findings underscore the ongoing connection between religion, culture, and social stratification.
