Dentigerous cysts linked to supernumerary teeth are uncommon, often involving a maxillary mesiodens. This review examines their characteristics and presents six new cases.

Area of Science:

  • Oral pathology
  • Odontology
  • Developmental dental anomalies

Background:

  • Dentigerous cysts are the most common developmental odontogenic cysts.
  • Supernumerary teeth are teeth in excess of the normal dental formula.
  • The association between dentigerous cysts and supernumerary teeth is infrequent.

Observation:

  • Dentigerous cysts associated with supernumerary teeth represent 5-6% of all dentigerous cysts.
  • These cysts exhibit similar sex predilection and age distribution to typical dentigerous cysts.
  • Approximately 90% of these cysts are linked to a maxillary mesiodens, a supernumerary tooth located between the central incisors.

Findings:

  • The study reviews existing literature on dentigerous cysts and supernumerary teeth.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Six additional cases of this rare condition are reported.
  • Analysis focuses on the clinical and radiographic features of these associated cysts and teeth.
  • Implications:

    • Understanding this rare association aids in accurate diagnosis and management.
    • Highlights the importance of considering supernumerary teeth in the differential diagnosis of dentigerous cysts.
    • Contributes to the body of knowledge on dental anomalies and their complications.
