Internet addiction significantly increases the risk of sleep problems and reduces sleep duration. This systematic review and meta-analysis confirm a strong link between problematic internet use and sleep disturbances.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Sleep Medicine
- Digital Health
Background:
- Problematic internet use, or internet addiction, is increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to sleep disturbances.
- Existing evidence on the association between internet addiction and sleep issues is inconsistent, necessitating further clarification.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to elucidate the relationship between internet addiction and sleep disturbances.
- To quantify the severity of the association between internet addiction and sleep problems and duration.
Main Methods:
- A systematic review was performed across major databases (Scopus, PubMed Central, ProQuest, Web of Knowledge, EMBASE) using relevant keywords.
- Observational studies (cohort, case-control, cross-sectional) investigating internet addiction and sleep parameters were selected.
- A random-effect meta-analysis was employed to calculate pooled odds ratios for sleep problems and standardized mean differences for sleep duration.
Main Results:
- Twenty-three studies comprising 35,684 participants were included in the meta-analysis.
- Individuals with internet addiction showed a significantly higher odds ratio (2.20) of experiencing sleep problems.
- A significant reduction in sleep duration (SMD: -0.24) was observed in the internet addiction group compared to normal users.
Conclusions:
- Internet addiction is significantly associated with an increased likelihood of sleep problems.
- Problematic internet use leads to a significant decrease in overall sleep duration.
- These findings underscore the importance of addressing internet addiction in the context of sleep health management.
