Red cell distribution width (RDW) levels are significantly elevated in women with preeclampsia compared to healthy individuals. Severe preeclampsia cases show even higher RDW than mild cases, indicating its potential as a biomarker.
Area of Science:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Hematology
- Clinical Diagnostics
Background:
- Preeclampsia is a severe pregnancy complication with potential adverse maternal and fetal outcomes.
- Existing research suggests a link between red cell distribution width (RDW) and preeclampsia, but a comprehensive meta-analysis was lacking.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and meta-analyze existing studies to assess the association between red cell distribution width (RDW) and preeclampsia.
- To compare RDW levels in women with preeclampsia versus controls, and between mild and severe preeclampsia cases.
Main Methods:
- A systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines.
- Searched multiple databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Google Scholar, Scopus, Embase, CINAHL) for relevant studies.
- Utilized Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for quality appraisal and OpenMeta Analyst for pooled logistic regression analysis.
Main Results:
- Eleven case-control studies (951 preeclampsia cases, 2024 controls) were included.
- Significantly higher mean RDW in preeclampsia patients (15.10%) compared to controls (14.26%).
- Significantly higher mean RDW in severe preeclampsia (15.37%) versus mild preeclampsia (14.03%).
Conclusions:
- Elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) is significantly associated with preeclampsia.
- RDW levels are higher in severe preeclampsia cases compared to mild cases, suggesting its potential as a severity marker.
