A comparison between 2D and 3D methods of quantifying facial morphology.

Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) facial anthropometry yield significantly different results. These imaging techniques for facial morphology assessment cannot be used interchangeably due to statistical variations.

- 150 subjects (75 males, 75 females) from northern Nigeria (Hausa ethnic group) were included.
- Facial dimensions were generated from digital camera (2D) photographs and 3D surface laser scans.
- Data were analyzed using R-statistic software with paired sample t-tests and Pearson correlation.

- A very low intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.26 indicated significant differences between 2D and 3D measurements.
- Measurements from the 3D laser scanner were consistently higher than those from the 2D camera.
- A statistically significant positive difference was observed between the 3D and 2D methods.
Conclusions:
- There are statistically significant variations between 2D and 3D anthropometric methods for facial morphology assessment.
- 2D and 3D anthropometry cannot be used interchangeably in clinical or forensic applications.
- Further research may be needed to establish specific applications for each technique.
