In statistics, several tools are used to interpret the data. Measures of central tendency represent the characteristics of the data, such as mean, median, and mode. Additionally, measures of variance like standard deviation and range are used to find the spread of data from the mean. Relative standing measures the distance between data locations. Commonly used measures of relative standings are percentile, z score, and quartiles.
Percentiles are a type of fractile that partition data into...

Data are individual items of information obtained from a population or sample. Data may be classified as qualitative (categorical), quantitative continuous, or quantitative discrete. Because it is not practical to measure the entire population in a study, researchers use samples to represent the population. A random sample is a representative group from the population chosen by using a method that gives each individual in the population an equal chance of being included in the sample. Random...

Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Virology
  • Vaccinology

Background:

  • Herpes zoster (shingles) is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), with over 90% of adults exposed.
  • Shingles manifests as a painful, unilateral vesicular rash following dermatomal pathways.
  • Current management includes antivirals and pain relief, with vaccination recommended for prophylaxis in older adults.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the efficacy and approval of a new recombinant subunit vaccine, HZ/su (Shingrix®), for herpes zoster prophylaxis.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical trials were conducted to evaluate the vaccine's efficacy.
  • Data analysis focused on participants aged 50 years and older.

Main Results:

  • The HZ/su vaccine demonstrated an overall efficacy of 97.2% in preventing herpes zoster.
  • This indicates a substantial reduction in shingles incidence among vaccinated individuals aged 50+.

Conclusions:

  • The HZ/su (Shingrix®) vaccine is a highly effective prophylactic measure against herpes zoster in older adults.
  • Its FDA approval in October 2017 marks a significant advancement in shingles prevention strategies.
