The effect of assertiveness training in schizophrenic patients on functional remission and assertiveness level
1Department of Nursing, Amasya University Faculty of Health Sciences, Amasya, Turkey.
Assertiveness training significantly improved functional remission and assertiveness in schizophrenic patients. This intervention should be integrated into psychiatric nursing rehabilitation services for better patient outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry and Mental Health
- Nursing Research
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Schizophrenia significantly impacts patients' functional abilities and social interactions.
- Limited research exists on the effectiveness of specific psychosocial interventions like assertiveness training for functional remission in schizophrenia.
- Enhancing assertiveness is crucial for improving daily functioning and social integration in individuals with schizophrenia.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of a structured assertiveness training program on functional remission in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia.
- To assess the effect of assertiveness training on the self-reported assertiveness levels of individuals with schizophrenia.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial design was employed, including pretest, posttest, and control groups with repeated measures.
- The experimental group received 8 weeks of targeted assertiveness training.
- Outcome measures included standardized assessments of functional remission and assertiveness.
Main Results:
- Assertiveness training demonstrated a statistically significant positive effect on increasing functional remission among schizophrenic patients.
- Patients participating in the assertiveness training program showed significant improvements in their assertiveness levels compared to the control group.
- The findings indicate that the intervention effectively enhanced key areas of functioning and interpersonal skills.
Conclusions:
- Assertiveness training is an effective intervention for improving functional remission and assertiveness in patients with schizophrenia.
- Psychiatric nurses can effectively implement assertiveness training as part of comprehensive rehabilitation services for schizophrenia.
- Integrating such training can enhance patient autonomy and quality of life within mental health care settings.
