The association between hepatitis B, hepatitis C and systemic sclerosis: a cross-sectional study

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is associated with chronic carriage of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). SSc patients with HBV showed higher rates of end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis.

- HCV carriage was found in 1.23% of SSc patients versus 0.65% of controls (OR 1.73).
- Both HBV and HCV were associated with SSc, smoking, dialysis treatment, and low socioeconomic status. SSc patients with HBV had higher rates of end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis.

- Chronic carriage of HBV and HCV is associated with SSc.
- Common immune mechanisms or therapeutic interventions may mediate this association.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications.
