Dental hypofunction alters subgingival microorganisms: a pilot study

Hypofunctional teeth showed decreased levels of certain bacterial strains compared to normofunctional teeth in healthy individuals and periodontitis patients. This finding may relate to physiological changes in the periodontal ligament.

- Porphyromonas gingivalis levels increased in the hypofunctional healthy group but decreased in the hypofunctional periodontitis group.
- No significant differences were observed in VEGF and HIF-1alpha levels in GCF or serum among the groups.
Conclusions:
- Reduced levels of specific bacterial strains were observed in hypofunctional teeth, irrespective of periodontal health status.
- These bacterial changes may be associated with periodontal ligament atrophy and associated physiological alterations in hypofunctional teeth.
