Professional Values

Nurses are responsible for caring for patients during birth, death, illness, and healing. Professional values guide the decisions and actions that nurses make in their careers. If nurses know the decisions and actions to take, providing patients with exceptional care is possible.
The values that are the foundation of the nursing profession are altruism, autonomy, human dignity, and social justice.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing
  • Patient Safety
  • Healthcare Management

Background:

  • Serious adverse events (SAEs) involving nursing staff require clear organizational protocols.
  • Existing protocols may not adequately address the needs of nurses experiencing SAEs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify essential interventions for an organizational protocol for responding to SAEs involving nursing staff.
  • To understand nurses' preferences for support following SAEs.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive exploratory study was conducted in Madrid, Spain.
  • Data were collected using a questionnaire administered to 248 nurses.

Main Results:

  • Nurses overwhelmingly prioritized legal advice (86.5%) and counseling (82.4%) for inclusion in SAE protocols.
  • A majority desired guidance on recording events (69.3%), legal safeguards (64.8%), and refresher training (54.5%).
  • Compulsory temporary or permanent transfer was the least favored intervention (3.3%).

Conclusions:

  • Nurses advocate for counseling, legal advice, communication training, and refresher training to manage SAE consequences.
  • Protocols should focus on supportive interventions rather than punitive measures like compulsory transfers.
